James Tiberius Kirk was born to Winona Kirk on Medical Shuttle 37 of the USS Kelvin while his father, George Kirk, flew the Kelvin on a suicide-collusion course with the Narada, allowing the evacuated crew of the Kelvin to survive. Jim was raised in Iowa, on Earth, by his mother and the failed attentions of a number of her boyfriends, most notably one abusive step-father, Frank. As he grew, he branched out to being ‘raised’ by a number of public servants as well, being arrested several times, and even serving a stint in juvenile hall. Eventually he adapted into the life of a roaming, quasi-homeless delinquent, estranged from his mother entirely.
A breath away from hitting rock bottom, Jim was hustled into joining Starfleet. While everyone – including himself – expected to get thrown out inside a week, he ended up flourishing. Starfleet turned out to be the perfect place for Jim Kirk – challenging, purposeful, diverse, and stable. A top student, he impressed his superiors with his genius and work ethic while simultaneously frustrating them with his extra-curricular activities and his habit of challenging the status-quo.
His promising career was almost blown, however, when he hacked and rigged the unbeatable Kobayashi Maru test to be able to win. He was confronted by the test’s programmer, Spock, but the trial was interrupted by a distress call from Vulcan. Initially barred from participating due to being on academic suspension, McCoy was able to sneak Jim on board the Enterprise. It turned out to be akin to divine intervention; though Vulcan was destroyed by Nero and the Narada, it was Jim’s knowledge of the situation that saved the Enterprise, and his instigation and leadership that allowed them to prevent the destruction of Earth and rescue Captain Pike.
For his actions, Jim was awarded with early graduation, commendations for bravery in action, immediate promotion to the rank of captain, and given command of the USS Enterprise. In addition, he was cleared of charges for tampering with the Kobayashi Maru exam, and was even given yet another commendation for original thinking, opening up a new school of debate and thought concerning the test and the philosophy behind it. Retaining the crew from the conflict with Nero, Captain Kirk and the Enterprise set off onto their five year mission, assigned to explore and discover. There was, of course, the implication of “please stay out of trouble”, but what was anybody honestly expecting?

A few weeks into their mission, Jim accidentally found a portal to the Nexus on deck three. After some initial solo exploration, Uhura confronted him with strange readings that were ultimately linked to the presence of the portal, and so Jim was forced to begin the process of filing official reports. He confided in Bones first (both because he’s his most trusted friend on board, and also to get the yelling overwith asap), and the two men conferenced with Admiral Pike until a consensus was reached within Starfleet Command: those aboard the Enterprise that were aware of the alternate universe phenomenon would be given permission to investigate the Nexus, though no more crew members would be informed. The affair would be handled discreetly, with respect to the impact crossing dimensions and timelines has already had on their world.
Of course, things are generally incapable of going smoothly when Jim Kirk is involved, and the entire subject immediately triggered a conflict between him and his first officer, Spock. Their already rocky relationship has been strained to an extreme, despite efforts on both sides. Regardless, Jim has pressed on with his attempts to figure the other man out, and carry out his duty. The Nexus weighs on him personally – it offers a far more detailed look into the life he’d only seen bare glimpses of in the mind meld with Spock Prime, as well as a variety of alternates that make his already tense interpersonal relations even more confusing.
There’s little to be done about it, however, and he likes to make up for the discomfort by hitting bars, meeting women, and stepping out here and there for the occasional foray into time travel. Meanwhile, he continues to command the Enterprise and lead his crew in their exploration of deep space and occasional babysitting jobs (nobody likes having to shuttle politicians, but it’s part of the package). With any luck, they’ll all refrain from killing each other long enough to get anything done.
