[edit] MAKING YOUR CHARACTER'S PAGE
Okay. You want to make your character's wiki page. BUT HOW?
- Step 1:
Go over to the search box (<-- thataway) and enter in your character's exact name. This means if your character's name is The Cable Guy you need to search The Cable Guy and not "cable guy" or "the cable guy". Case sensitive and all. Assuming all goes well, you will end up with a page that says:
There is no page titled "The Cable Guy". You can create this page.
- Step 2:
Click the link embedded in the words "create this page". You are now editing your character's wiki page! Click the decal in the upper lefthand corner of the control panel that says "Wikitext". Of course you can edit your wiki however you want once you get the hang of it, but for now, just do it this way because that's how I know how to edit things and I'm making the tutorial.
- Step 3:
Go to Template:Infobox and copy and paste the complete code on the left onto the top of your editing space. Do not add html or ljcode to the image spaces or to the journal space. When you are done filling it out, it should look something like this:
- Step 4:
Now it's time for some fancy ass lyrics. For some reason nobody fucking uses normal navigation headers here on BDW, we all use song lyrics or poetry or whatever and it barely makes any sense but that's how we roll, so, you know. CONFORM. To make your navigation links, you use = signs around your lyrics. Two equal signs on either side are a large line, three are smaller indentations. Pick out your lyrics, how many lines you want, and then write them out with the equal signs around them. It should look something like this:
- Step 5:
Now you need to put your character into the right category! That would be the character category (and whatever else is applicable, like dead guys). At the BOTTOM of everything, place in your footer, which is bracket bracket Category colon Cast List bracket bracket. Since it will not let me type that in in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM without doing something wacky, here's a picture of it: False alarm it seems someone has decided to show off their superior wiki skills, Slarti.
Alternately:
[[Category:Cast List]]
- Step 6:
Preview and save. Hit "Show preview" to make sure you haven't cocked anything up. Good? Great. Hit "Save page". IMPORTANT NOTE - don't use your back button and make sure every time you edit or save, it's in Wikitext mode. Screwing with the current version as you're trying to edit it can confuse it and cause it to lose everything. Also, if you are not logged in, it will ask you to solve a simple addition or subtraction problem to prove you aren't a bot.
- Step 7:
PARTY DOWN AND EDIT YOUR WIKI AT YOUR LEISURE!
[edit] FURTHER FANCY EDITING
Now that you've set up your wiki, you might want to learn how to do stuff like formatting or bolding text or adding more images. Wiki editing can be really confusing! To get started, check out MediaWiki's editing guide. Once you're familiar enough with working in Wikitext, Slarti personally recommends going into your user preferences and, under the "Misc" tab, disabling the rich editor, which will put you in Wikitext mode full-time.
Sometimes it can help to view the sources of other wiki pages, either here or at any wiki, even Wikipedia. Some wikis have a 'view source' option, some don't. Usually you can click 'edit' and surf around, but make sure you don't save anything or muck up anybody else's work.
[edit] MAKING NON-CHARACTER PAGES
Non-character pages (like photoshopped horrors, quotes, bad ideas, etc, are made just like character pages are, just make sure you put the right footer in. If you don't put a footer in, your page won't show up in any category and be pretty much lost at sea.
The template for your player info if you choose to make a page about you the typist is Template:Muninfo and editing that is just like editing your character's template.
[edit] ETC.
If you have any questions or further inquiries or think something should be on here or have a helpful link or if you fuck something up and can't figure out how to fix it or WHATEVER, go ahead and contact Claire. She is the admin here and... well if she can't figure it out she can probably whine at Slarti, who will probably sigh in a manner more long-suffering than his actual inconvenience and then help out anyway, because despite all his sighing, he doesn't seem to actually mind helping, as evidenced by the facts that a) he actually helps and b) he does things like fixing code confusion above WITHOUT BEING ASKED because he loves us and loves his lot in life. Furthermore, he knows what's good for him.
